Resident Evil Doesn't Need Any More Remakes, Who Can't Wait?

--

I know I’m in the minority here, but the Resident Evil 4 remake feels like a game trying to solve problems that didn’t exist in the original. Problems that arise from trying to fix a game with such a precise design.

Mechanics like parrying, knife durability, stealth kills, item crafting, and even modern control schemes. None of these things made the original Resident Evil 4 interesting, but they’re supposed to be the hallmarks of modern games.

What really annoys me about the state of this series is that this remake was supposed to replace the original version. The remake is now the definitive version, while the original is just a game with a release year tacked onto it. That’s how we know these games are old and “outdated.” I’d much rather have more original Resident Evil games than safe remakes.

Although I didn’t like the Ethan Winters duology, I appreciate them for genuinely trying on their own merits. And I really liked Resident Evil Requiem.

This game isn’t without its flaws, and at times it feels like two halves of two different games stitched together—not quite fully realized. But in my opinion, it’s the most compelling game in the series since Resident Evil Revelations 2.

I think it’s inevitable that the remaining Resident Evil remakes will eventually come to fruition. But hopefully, if Resident Evil Requiem sets the standard, we might see more variety along the way.
