Director Shinji Ishihira Emphasizes That the 'Reincarnated as a Sword' Anime Focuses on a Father-Child Relationship, Not a Romance
--
TAMENITY - In the anime industry, the isekai genre is often associated with a recurring set of tropes: a powerful male protagonist who rescues various girls, subsequently forming romantic relationships or a harem. However, director Shinji Ishihira asserts that the anime Reincarnated as a Sword (Tensei Shitara Ken Deshita) presents a distinctly different narrative one centered on the bond between a father figure raising his daughter, rather than a romantic pairing.
This statement from the seasoned director known for his work on Fairy Tail and Log Horizon comes as a breath of fresh air for fans of fantasy anime. From the very beginning of production with studio C2C, Ishihira and his writing team committed to preserving the purity of the warm, platonic relationship between the two main characters: Shisho ("Teacher") and Fran.
A Unique Approach to Familial Relationships
The story of Reincarnated as a Sword centers on a man who is reincarnated into a parallel world as a powerful, magical sword. He eventually encounters Fran, a young girl from the Black Cat Tribe who has been suffering as a slave. After rescuing her from danger, the sword who comes to be known as "Shisho" (or "Teacher") becomes both a weapon and a protector for Fran.
According to Shinji Ishihira, the dynamic established here is a pure reflection of a parent-child bond. Shisho acts much like a protective single father: he prepares delicious meals for Fran, worries whenever she acts recklessly in battle, and guides her as she grows into a strong, independent adventurer. In turn, Fran views Shisho as both a mentor and a parental figure the first person to provide her with affection and a sense of security following her dark past.
