Language support is another unanswered question. Netflix has not specified whether the compilation will include multiple dubbed versions from launch or initially offer only the original Japanese audio with subtitles. These details could significantly influence the reception of the project, particularly among international viewers who want to experience Maomao's story in their preferred language.
The decision to shorten an established series has both advantages and disadvantages. On the positive side, placing The Apothecary Diaries on Netflix could introduce Maomao to people who rarely watch Japanese animation. The platform's broad international audience may help the franchise reach viewers who have never considered watching the original series.
However, removing scenes also creates the risk of losing details that make the story enjoyable. The original anime is known for its combination of palace mysteries, medical knowledge, political intrigue, and character interactions. Its pacing allows individual cases to develop while gradually revealing more about the imperial court.
A condensed version might preserve the main plot points but sacrifice smaller moments that contribute to the atmosphere and character development. This is particularly important for a series whose appeal depends not only on major revelations but also on Maomao's observations and interactions with the people around her.
