Dragon Quest Heroes: Torneko’s Mystery Dungeon – Classic HD is based on the original title developed by Chunsoft, now published by Square Enix for Nintendo Switch 1 and 2, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, and Steam/PC. A Switch 2 code was provided for this review.
The premise is quite simple. This is a re-release of the original 1993 version, marking its first-ever release in English. Torneko’s Mystery Dungeon is the first spin-off of the legendary Dragon Quest series and the first Mystery Dungeon game—in that sense, it’s a seminal work that established two distinct branches of the renowned Dragon Quest main series.
In many ways, we owe a debt of gratitude to this game for paving the way for series such as Dragon Quest Monsters, Pokémon Mystery Dungeon, and many more. The official availability of this title on modern platforms and in multiple languages is a major step toward preserving this piece of gaming history.
The gameplay is also quite simple. You play as Torneko from Dragon Quest IV and explore a massive, mysterious dungeon. Each playthrough involves collecting gold, treasure, items, weapons, and more as you navigate the dungeon levels and try to reach the very bottom floor.
This dungeon is full of monsters that aren’t happy to see you, and you’ll battle them to earn experience points as you venture deeper underground. Along the way, you’ll find new weapon upgrades, healing items, magic wands and staffs with magical spells, special one-time-use items, and much more to help you overcome increasingly difficult challenges.
