Tatsuki Fujimoto Is Developing a Manga About Death, Exploring a Positive Perspective

That process has yielded many ideas that never made it to publication. Fujimoto said that recently he had come up with many short story concepts before ultimately discarding most of them.

However, his current project has moved beyond that stage. Fujimoto described it as “a story that takes a positive view of death.” He added that once he has a plot, the next step is to show it to others and see if they find the idea compelling before he begins drawing.

These comments were made during a joint interview with filmmaker Hirokazu Kore-eda, who is directing the 2026 live-action adaptation of Fujimoto’s Look Back. The interview offers a timely glimpse into Fujimoto’s creative plans following the conclusion of Chainsaw Man. ComicBook.com also reported on this revelation.

The idea of examining death from an unconventional perspective is not entirely foreign to Fujimoto. His works—including Fire Punch, Goodbye, Eri, Look Back, and Chainsaw Man—have repeatedly explored death, grief, loss, and how people continue to live after experiencing tragedy.

This makes the new concept particularly intriguing for Chainsaw Man fans. Fujimoto has previously used death not merely as an ending, but as a force that transforms characters and shapes their choices.

These comments also surfaced as Look Back once again garnered attention thanks to Kore-eda’s live-action adaptation. Reuters reported that the film premiered at the 2026 Venice Film Festival, where it became Fujimoto’s first work to receive a live-action adaptation.
