Synopsis: Verity
Lowen Ashleigh was a writer looking for work when she was contacted about a major project.
As a result of a mysterious accident, Verity Crawford, a famous author, was unable to finish her successful book series. Jeremy Crawford, Verity’s husband, then asked Lowen to complete the series.
However, while working on his assignment, Lowen discovered another manuscript that he wasn’t supposed to read. The manuscript raised various questions about Verity’s mental state, as well as its possible connection to the works she had written up to that point. And the further Lowen read, the harder it became for him to distinguish between what was reality and what might simply be fiction.
Ulasan Verity
"Verity" is actually better described as a psychological thriller. The tension stems from the fact that Lowen (and, of course, the audience) is constantly left wondering what is really going on. However, the film takes a slow-burn approach.
There are indeed a few jump scares here and there to make the audience feel a little uneasy. But if you go in expecting a slasher or a horror movie that’s intense from start to finish, you might be a little disappointed. This film is more interested in making us question its characters than simply scaring the audience.
In the film world, Verity is known as a writer whose works are dark.
Verity’s best-selling books take the villain’s perspective, with main characters who are generally troubled individuals.
And this is actually one of the things I like most about this movie. The further we get into the story, the more it feels as though the events we’re witnessing ourselves bear a resemblance to the descriptions in Verity’s books. It’s as if there’s a meta layer within the story.
At first, Lowen and Jeremy seemed like relatively good people. But is that really the case?
Verity is able to produce bestsellers by adopting the villain’s point of view. But if that perspective is so close to her own, is Verity really just writing fiction?
What caught my attention while watching this movie was how we’re gradually shown a group of people, each with their own dark side. And what we take to be the truth may not be as simple as we imagine.
Since the tension in Verity stems from its exploration of the characters’ darker sides and the mystery surrounding Verity’s condition, I think that alone is enough to make this film unsuitable for younger audiences.
