The Future of 300 Shueisha Manga Titles on MANGA MILLION Beyond 2027 Remains Uncertain

With just over a year remaining until the deadline, the future of this intellectual property (IP) has come into question. If the platform shuts down without a mitigation plan, hundreds of manga titles—which have only recently benefited from official translations—risk being relegated back to the archives and becoming inaccessible to international readers.
In response to these concerns, recent industry reports indicate that Shueisha is open to licensing offers from external parties. This move serves as an alternative strategy to ensure that the massive translation project they have undertaken does not go to waste.
The Tokyo-based publisher is inviting local publishers, digital comic platforms, and third-party distributors worldwide to acquire the distribution rights for these hundreds of titles.
By opening up licensing opportunities, Shueisha hopes that global readers will still be able to enjoy these comics legally beyond 2027, even if through different platforms.
