Claustrophobic Horror Innovation: An In-depth Review of Silent Hill: Townfall on PC and PlayStation 5

--

TAME OTN - After a long wait by fans of the psychological horror genre, Konami in collaboration with publisher Annapurna Interactive has officially launched Silent Hill: Townfall. Developed by Screen Burn Interactive (formerly known as No Code), the game offers a fresh take and a bold experiment that departs from the traditional conventions of the main series.

Moving away from the classic third-person camera, Townfall adopts a first-person perspective, immersing players in the atmosphere of a remote harbor town called St. Amelia in 1996. The result is an intense, disorienting, and deeply nerve-wracking horror experience.

Narratively, the game is divided into six chapters and features five distinct endings. The protagonist, Simon Ordell, finds himself caught in a web of mystery that blends classic Silent Hill themes such as personal guilt with environmental conspiracies and corporate exploitation by a mysterious organization known as CEG.

The game’s atmosphere is masterfully crafted through the use of cinematic, letterboxed visuals (featuring black bars at the top and bottom of the screen), which instantly make the game’s cramped interior spaces feel far more claustrophobic and mentally oppressive for the player.

Returning to an island town to ‘put things right’, Simon Ordell descends into a world of tense evasion, explosive confrontations, and mind-bending puzzles that slowly surface the truth of St. Amelia.

Below is an in-depth review covering performance, narrative aspects, and gameplay mechanics on PC and PlayStation 5:

1. Gameplay & New Mechanics

  • Focus on Stealth: For the first time in the series, stealth serves as a core mechanic. You must hide in closets, lock doors from the inside, or throw bottles and stones to distract monsters that are sensitive to sound.
  • CRTV Detection Tool: The protagonist, Simon Ordell, is equipped with a vintage pocket television called the "CRTV," which is used to pick up frequencies and track the positions of monsters through walls. Manually tuning the device to different frequencies for various enemy types adds a unique layer of tension.
