The story begins in the distant future, where the world is divided by complex geopolitical conflicts. The Land of God, a theocratic region led by a holy prophet named Ihwa, is embroiled in a protracted war against the Kingdom of Wusa (the Land of Snakes). Amid these tensions, the military and an execution squad hold complete control over the nation’s security.
Lee Hwan-mae, the leader of an elite execution squad called Maerangukjuk, possesses the ability—or the opportunity—to see the future through the eyes of the Prophet Ihwa. In these visions, he witnesses total destruction, massacres, and bloodshed that will wipe out civilization across the entire Western continent.
Surprisingly, the mastermind or catalyst behind this great catastrophe is Gwanchang, a young officer who is actually Lee Hwan-mae’s own subordinate. Gwanchang is identified as the “Black Swan” destined to shake the world.
Instead of killing Gwanchang to eliminate the threat—which would actually risk setting off a chain of events leading to Gwanchang’s own death—Lee Hwan-mae chose an alternative strategy. He decided to place Gwanchang under his strict supervision and make him his personal attendant. His goal was to forge a bond, control Gwanchang’s movements, and gradually alter that dire course of fate.
