Kakao Webtoon and Tapas Will Be Shut Down

I got this news from Kakao Entertainment, which reportedly plans to shut down Kakao Webtoon and Tapas. They intend to merge everything into KakaoPage before the end of 2026. This information came from a report by IT Chosun on September 22. Tapas is their webtoon and web novel platform for the North American market. Kakao Entertainment acquired Tapas in 2021 for approximately 510 million U.S. dollars.

Once they’re merged, there will be approximately 16,000 original IPs, plus user data from Kakao Webtoon and KakaoPage, all consolidated onto a single platform. On September 29, Kakao Entertainment is scheduled to provide a detailed explanation of the migration timeline to users who are still using both services.

Most of a Kakao Webtoon user’s reading history, remaining cash, and unused reading vouchers will reportedly be transferred to KakaoPage. However, they will provide separate instructions on which items can be transferred and how to do so.

In addition, Kakao Entertainment plans to use payment and subscription data from the merged platforms to generate AI-based content recommendations. Their network of creators, partners, content production teams, and marketing resources will also be consolidated into KakaoPage.
