The Apothecary Diaries Live-Action
A live-action series based on *The Apothecary Diaries* has been officially announced, starring Mana Ashida as Maomao. Co-produced by Amazon MGM Studios and TOHO, the series will stream exclusively worldwide on Prime Video in 2028, reaching over 240 countries and regions. A promotional image (teaser) featuring Ashida in character as Maomao has also been released.
Set in the inner palace of a fictional empire, the story follows Maomao, an apothecary raised in the pleasure district. Using her extensive medical knowledge and keen powers of observation, she unravels mysteries and conspiracies brewing within the imperial court.
The popular light novel series has sold over 57 million copies worldwide. Its anime adaptation began airing in 2023. The third season of *The Apothecary Diaries* is set to premiere on October 2, while the film *The Apothecary Diaries: Bouhi no Hihou* (translating to "The Late Consort's Secret Treasure") will hit Japanese theaters on December 11.
This new live-action series is a project designed to bring the story's appeal to the screen without compromise. Production is being handled by TOHO—the company behind the anime series—and Amazon MGM Studios.
To faithfully recreate the magnificent world of the inner palace in live-action, the production team built a massive set and strove for the highest standards in production design, costumes, and visual effects (VFX). Filming spanned six months on an expansive set that meticulously recreated the inner palace environment.

Yuki Saito serves as director, while Erika Yoshida is handling the screenplay. The project brings together a top-tier Japanese production team with the goal of delivering the series to audiences around the world. Maomao, played by Ashida, is an eccentric young woman with a deep fascination for medicines and poisons. At the same time, her keen insight and extensive pharmaceutical knowledge enable her to solve one incident after another within the inner palace.
The newly released promotional image deliberately conceals Ashida's Maomao's eyes. Instead, it focuses attention on her firmly set lips and dignified presence as she holds a handkerchief, creating an image that will undoubtedly remind fans of a memorable scene from early in the story.
